Auto Expo 2012: Mahindra Presents SUV Rexton, Nissan Showcases A 7-Seater


NEW DELHI: Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra announced its intention to invest over Rs 800 lakh to develop a common platform for the two products from its Korean subsidiary SsangYong Motor in the next 3-4 years.

The company on Thursday introduced four models from the portfolio of SsangYong at 11 Auto Expo here. Of them, Rexton utlity sports car will be released to the Indian market over the next six months.

In addition, the homegrown auto major also announced that it has entered into a segment of heavy buses, which will be built on the Mahindra Navistar, the following year.

We are developing an entirely new platform with SsangYong. Will be of two different products, but with the same platform and engine ... It will take 3-4 years for development, Mahindra & Mahindra President (automotive and agricultural sector) Pawan Goenka told reporters.  He, however, refused to share details such as whether the final product will be a car or SUV.  

When asked about investing in this project, Goenka said: When we develop a platform for a product, you need Rs 600-800 crore. As this new platform will be of two products, it takes more than that amount.   While the presentation Rexton SUV, said the vehicle will be launched in India in the next six months as completely knocked down (CKD) unit.


Were putting up the assembly line for the vehicle at our facility in Chakan. This is the second operation CKD SsangYong outside Korea, he said.  He said the company is looking at the sale of 500 to 600 units of Rexton per month once the capacity is fully utilized.  The company will launch another SUV SsangYong range - Korando C - next year in India, he said.  The sales network of SsangYong vehicles in India, Goenka said it will be distributed through existing outlets of M & M. 

However, we have not decided yet on the vehicle badging, he added.  Besides India, SsangYong has operations in Russia ERC model.  Were trying to increase local production in Russia. For next year we will add more models to our line of ERC-ups, said Goenka.  SsangYong Motor Company will also begin to operate with CKD in Brazil over the next two years, followed by China at a later stage, he said.
Evalia presented: Japanese auto major Nissan Motor Company unveiled "Evalia" a seven-seater car at the Auto Expo, and said it will triple its dealer network in the country over the next three years.

Evalia Nissan has developed, in collaboration with Ashok Leyland and produce the car at its plant near Chennai.

The Evalia, which is said to be launched this summer, will be the third model to be extended out of the plant of the company after Chennai Micra, Sunny.

Speaking about the expansion plan of the company at the Auto Expo 11, Nissan Motor Company Corporate Vice President Gilles Normand, said, "Currently, there are 50 dealers in India, but that figure will double by the end of next year . It is the goal to reach 150 outlets by 2015. "

When asked about the launch of the car, Andy Palmer, executive vice president (Global Planning and Program Management) at Nissan Motor Company, said, "It will be launched this summer and will have a very competitive price. We are targeting multiple use vehicle segment. "



Commenting on the company's plan to expand capacity, Normand said: "We are adding a second production line at Oragadam plant near Chennai in March this year."

Evalia addition, the company also introduced a LEAF zero emission electric cars, Nissan GTR and a third is compact conceto Sports (CSC).

About their investment plans, the company had announced an investment of 4,500 crore rupees to be up to 2015 Oragadam plant. Of the total, the company has already invested millions of rupees R 2800.

For the fiscal year ended March 2010, the company expects to sell 40,000 vehicles in India, which includes brands such as Micra, Sunny, Teana, X-Trail, 370Z sports car.
